Inspiration For Your Darling’s Vows

Welcome readers! To start off this blog we’d thought it would be best to stick with our theme, ‘Knot Average,’ to suit the not average wedding couple. It has come to our attention that the traditional wedding vowsoften read in ceremonies may not always suit the unions to be in this day and age. When it comes to the hymns you wish you to dedicate to your everlasting counterpart, it’s crucial to keep it honest and realistic, yet have that unyielding and romantic flame behind it. Here are three easy tips to help beat writer’s block for original and authentic vows:

1. Reminisce. Muse over your most cherished and loving moments with your loved one. Try to remember specific details that caught your attention that made that moment so special (the way the light hit the curves of her face or the resilient pulse of your heart when you first met). Write down several adjectives that come to mind. Pick up a thesaurus if you need to. A good vocabulary with the right motifs will help add sparks to your vows.

2. Intentions. What do you promise? Make a list of all the things you hope to accomplish as a mate and as a couple. Be realistic, but also dream. By this we mean to set a reasonable standard for yourself, not promising extravagant things you can’t afford or don’t intend on doing, but also point out the long-term things you plan to build on as the two of you grow.

3. Stylize. Write in terms that are natural for you. This is what makes the vow authentic. When you speak in terms of whom you are and what you hope to be, you’re being honest to yourself and most of all, the one you love. We know you’ve got some cute and funny quirks or an affectionate character so use it to your advantage as a writer and the voice you want to portray.

Still having trouble?

You can also pick a set of versus from your favorite poetry for vows or an entire poem. Here are a few poems and vows by famous writers for inspiration.
■ How do I love thee?

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I love thee to the depth and breadth and height My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight For the ends of being and ideal grace. I love thee to the level of every day’s Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light. I love thee freely, as men strive for right. I love thee purely, as they turn from praise. I love thee with the passion put to use In my old griefs, and with my childhood’s faith. I love thee with a love I seemed to lose With my lost saints. I love thee with the breath, Smiles, tears, of all my life; and, if God choose, I shall but love thee better after death.

– Elizabeth Barrett Browning
■It’s all I have to bring today (26)

It’s all I have to bring today – This, and my heart beside – This, and my heart, and all the fields – And all the meadows wide – Be sure you count – should I forget Some one the sum could tell – This, and my heart, and all the Bees Which in the Clover dwell.

– Emily Dickinson
■ Nontraditional vow

____, Today, tomorrow and for all the rest of my days, I promise to stand beside you To dance with you in times of joy To lift you up in times of sadness To rejoice with you in times of health To comfort you in times of illness I promise to turn to you for solace, for encouragement, and for inspiration I promise to be faithful and true to you I promise to shower you with love and affection Every joyous and blessed day, for the rest of our lives.
